25/01/01 - An MV SV special?? Could you build it? thanks to Darren DMcm101971@aol.com for the idea and quality image...

sv650_special.jpg

So I hope you can put this on to your Web site so that it might inspire someone to create a real modified SV650 to match my picture.  tis done Darren....people, be inspired!

25/01/01 - Many thanks to Jorge & Co at Renegade UK.....

Some of you may remember that Jorge at Renegade has been supporting my chosen charity by making a contribution for each exhaust system sold as a result of this website. I'm very pleased to be able to say that I have today forwarded another £75 to MENCAP. Thank you very much Jorge, every penny is needed and I appreciate your help.

Donation email receipt:

Subject: Thankyou for donating to MENCAP

Thank you!

Dear K D JONES,

Thank you for your donation of £75 which will help us continue our work in offering help and support to people with a learning disability
(mental handicap).

It means a lot to us that you support our work, and more importantly more children and adults will be able to lead much fuller and happier
lives, thanks to many supporters like you. Over 200 families a week have a child born with a learning disability that's over 100,000 families a
year in need!

On behalf of Daisy and all those families that will benefit in some way, please accept my heartfelt thanks for your kind gift.

Yours sincerely,

David Scott-Ralphs
Director of Fundraising

Thank you!

As an aside I will be taking part in the 2001 National Rally this summer so if any of you are feeling flush with cash I'll be posting a request nearer the time for sponsorship. I don't charge for use of this website (see posting below) so maybe you guys could help me out on this one to see if I can raise a substantial amount for  MENCAP? I hope so.

23/01/01 - Yipee - Harry Harry.frith@ic24.net is happy!

Well I am now a proud to be owner of a SV, yet another who owes his thanks to you for this TOP site, which did not help influence me at all ;-)  anyway thanks for all your time and effort you've put into this and to all the people who have contributed to this site with all their top tips and that.

Anyway another vote from me for you to have a free bike from suzuki.  how many is that now?   4 or 5?

23/01/01 - Brake lights / switch - Can you help Steve steve.vaid@heatvc.com ?

I've got a recurring brake light problem with my SV (T Reg, 99, N) :

- twice in the last six months the front brake switch has packed in. Squeeze the lever - no brake lights.
- once the brake light just stayed on permanently
- now, on front brake application - no lights, but back brake works if stomped on

Does anyone know if this is common problem ? Or can I just put it down to wear and tear ? Would this be a fix under warranty ? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Still riding into London everyday - upto 11,000 miles now - still lots of fun - top bike.

23/01/01 - poly26.com? - Marty MartyWilson555@aol.com needs some help....

I've been having a hard time trying to find a distributor or any info on www.Poly26.com  as mentioned on your site. I would very much like to purchase one of the radiator covers they produce, for my SV650.

But have not had any luck contacting them. Any advice?

23/01/01 - You can now get an SV manual - thanks very much for this info James weazel2001@go.com ....

I enjoy your site and have found it very useful. good...  I recently ordered a repair manual from Motocom, the url is http://www.motocom.com  It is the official Suzuki service manual for both the sv650x and sv650s. It comes unbound in loose leaf form and is punched to fit a standard 3 ring binder. It is not as user-friendly as a Haynes or Clymer manual, but contains every technical detail.

I hope you find this information helpful.

22/01/01 - Classic & Motorcycle Mechanics - Scotty scott.elliott@freeuk.com sends this in... glowing stuff indeed!

The January 2001 issue of "Classic & Motorcycle Mechanics" has a "Tomorrow's Classic: Suzuki SV650" feature.
Over 3 pages, they summarise:
"the SV's 645cc engine is quite simply a masterful piece of engineering"
"out on the road, the result is outstanding"
"Part of the joy of riding the SV is the slick and light six-speed gearbox".
The suspension is heavily criticised, but is also said to give "character"
"The rest of the package is first class"
"Will the SV be a future classic? The answer is very probably yes"
"What makes the SV outstanding is that it is a fun motorcycle to ride whatever you do with it"
"A vee-twin BSA for 21st century? Yes, very probably"

22/01/01 - Why Free? - A good question from Gi Leoni marina.devis@pandora.be

I'm a "middle-aged "Belgian SV - S rider. I enjoy your (our) site very much.  Wouldn't it be suitable to ask for a little contribution to the users ??

I am certainly prepared to contribute.

This web is free because...
1) Call me old fashioned but I still like to think that the internet (www) can be used for non-commercial reasons.....as it began
2) I sometimes (like now) have periods when I slip behind on postings, if it was commercial I would *have to* provide timely information...I try to keep it bang up to date  now but don't always succeed.
3) I don't think many of you would pay to view this information.....you'd go and get it from somewhere else instead (like svrider.com)
4) If you did pay I still wouldn't get rich quick!  (unfortunately!!)
5) and most importantly.....the web site is kindly hosted free of charge to me by Steven and Chris (www.russell.net) - without their help this site would not exist - a
BIG THANKS goes to them...

22/01/01 - UK SV rideout 2001 - Martyn martyn@thinktank.freeserve.co.uk asks....

When (and where) is the .org meet going to be this year? Please try and pick a day where the weather will be as nice as last year! I have a friend coming over from Holland who rides an SVS, and I am sure that he would love to go on the rideout.

Please see the Forum, thread 1076

22/01/01 - Colour SV650S 1999 - Bart sv_biker@hotmail.com sent this and I'm slow to post it! aarrgghhh...

I have a BIG problem. I need the composition of the bleu colour. Need to paint the bike.

Need it very urgent   bugger...you sent this on 12th Jan!! SORRY! can anyone help Bart?

22/01/01 - Some thanks - Cheers Andy andrewbooth21@hotmail.com ...

just dropping a note to say cheers for the cracking website. Thanks to the site I took the plunge yesterday, and moved me Scottoiler from under the seat (where the garage put it - too chicken (re: lazy and incompetent) to do it myself), and moved it to beyond the frame cover - sits there  perfick.

Although it can't be adjusted or filled too easily! I didn't need to bend the L bracket like you said, which way did you have it?

Keep up the excellent work,  trying....

18/01/01 - Binned SV images - Adey Divewsac@aol.com got more than his knee down...

I was going to send some photos of my gleaming Black 2000 SV650SY, with lowers and tinted screen. I was going to wash it and use my new digi camera to send you some pics. However this morning on my way home from ordering a new race can, I binned it on a roundabout. I lost the front end good style on a diesel patch. The bike slid about 30 yards, me about 20 (thank god for leathers) where have I heard that before..... The lowers took the brunt, along with the end can. The upper is cracked, the double bubble screen got smashed, back brake pedal snapped, bar end, mirror and brake lever badly scraped. I was not too bad myself when I picked myself up off the road, badly bruised elbow shoulder and thigh, and dented pride, I've had my knee down on that particular roundabout a few times, this time though I got more than my knee down!!!! There goes my no claims!!

As usual, quite a few cars went by, and guess what!......no one stopped to see if I was OK, and I had to lift the bike myself, thank god the SV is not a heavy bike 169kg for the faired SVS.... Hopefully I will be back on the road again soon.  fingers crossed..

17/01/01 - SV650S being broken in UK - James Holland jhsracing@lineone.net sends this info...

Just a short note as we have just started to break a 99 sv650s in yellow most parts are still available.

If we can be of any help please contact us by e-mail or tel 01179712966.

16/01/01 - Images of mods made to SV - Thanks to Mark mcdavey@dsl-only.net for these...

I just thought I'd send in some pictures of my bike and list the work I've done to it. Hopefully, anyone considering the mods I've done will find the links provided helpful.

I bought my bike in Vancouver, British Columbia last June and live in Portland, Oregon. So far I have added a jet kit and drilled out the plate in the exhaust can 7-8 1/4" holes. (just want to say I don't recommend this btw..) This gave me about 5 more ponies in the midrange (dynoed) and the exhaust note is deeper. I also added a 4' flip windscreen (Givi). The full lower fairing and seat cowl from http://www.tcpsa.com/tcp/home.htm  I ordered them through CMW Motorcycles, 20 The Hornet, Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 4JG  Tele. #01243 782544/784539. Ask for Richard Morgan.

The undertray and hugger were from F.S.D. http://www.freestreetdesign.com and were top quality and the price was right. I also used their "flush mount" rear turn indicators. One of the problems you will run into is how to light the license plate. Well, I have the perfect solution. I used an LED from http://www.theledlight.com part #CPW3. It attaches straight to the 12 volt lead from the old light and lasts 10-11years.

If you want any more info you can email me at mcdavey01@yahoo.com .

08/01/01 - Smashed and rebuilt - This is Ben's NKDFUN650@zdnetonebox.com story....

I've never posted images of my bike on your site before mainly due to that fact that it was a plain ol' 99 SV650 that nearly everyone knows about. I rode my *Suzi* for just over a year when I went out of town and let my dad (20+ years riding experience) take my SV for a spin.

Long story short: he was cut off and had to lay my bike down to avoid *becoming one with* the car. When I came back home I wanted to cry and beat the snot out my dad. Well I didn't do either (asphalt beat me to it, pun intended he's fine now. 98.9% complete). Instead I began looking at after-market parts to replace damaged parts or parts I just wanted to replace any way.

Now, with a ride-able *product,* describing my SV can be done in one or  six words. One word: Mutt. Six words: Jap bike, Euro parts, American  rider. Here Ħs what I've dressed Suzi up with so far:

Free Street Design headlamp (France)( )
Red Racing Parts mini mirrors (Italy)( )
Zweirad Technik Visbek handlebar end turn-signals (Germany)( )
Fly-Design SV650 Undertail (France)( )
Carbo-Tech carbon fiber front fender (Germany?)( or )(Jeff @ Carbo Tex buys from Knut @ Max Moto but (Jeff) gives an AMA discount)
*SVRider*.com* mental horse power (Canada)( Thanks Rob! )

Parts to come include,*but not limited to:*

Black Widow high mount C/F exhaust ( )
C/F rear hugger (without an integrated chain guard)
belly pan (to put more *mental horse power* stickers on. Inside joke: ever see cages w/ loads of stickers and they think their fast? Stickers = Mental Horse Power. More ego stickers give more mental h.p.)
Fork Springs (why I haven't done it yet is beyond me!)( )
Seat cowl (like the clean look of Targa˘s, but what this I˘ve heard Suzuki has one out?)
Suzuki C/F gel seat (Sat on a GSXR w/ a gel seat @ the Long Beach bike show. My arse sang *Hallelujah* for 12 seconds.)
Suzuki C/F *SV* tank bra
Suzuki C/F triple crown cover
...and probably some more bits here and there...

I'd now like to thank my fellow SV'ers on the mailing list for being supportive and very informative, thanks guys!

08/01/01 - Couple of pictures of my '99 SV - I think Sean  hatcho@hotmail.com likes the site!

Brilliant website!! Was one of the deciding factors of buying my SV. I reckon Suzuki should be paying you commission (or maybe a new SV every year!). Wasn't able to take the bike for a spin before I bought it so it was all the good word on your site that made me pass over the Bandit for an SV650S. Best move I ever made :-)) good...I'm pleased we could all help...

Here's couple of photos of my pride and joy and all the add-ons I've picked up over the last year or so:

Tinted bubble screen
Rear seat cowl, Rear hugger, Engine Cowl - all colour matched
Blue Flame oval alloy can - makes the SV sound like it really should!!

If there are any other SV riders over here interested in a meet - please mail me at hatcho@hotmail.com  Also, the engine cowl is for sale if anyone is interested - see the for sale section for details. (I may have mislaid the advert..please send again Sean!)

Thanks again for the great website - excellent source of info on an excellent bike !

08/01/01 - Blue transparent windscreen question - This from Kiri kiri@ix.netcom.com ....

I am interested in getting the blue transparent windscreen shown in the Images section of the site, Category 8, 4th row from the bottom, 2nd and 3rd pic from the left (sv6501t.jpg & sv6502t.jpg). I  cannot make out what the brand is.

If you know of any info on this windscreen, I would appreciate it if you could email me with any details. Any help would be appreciated.

The original posting was made in the November section on the 16th....the email address of the sender is pete_nichols@hp.com Give  Pete a try...

08/01/01 - Looking for manual - Michael nifty@tkk.att.ne.jp is in search....can you help us??

I'm a new owner of a SV650S for just two days and am enjoying the breaking in period. But, as I live in Japan, the only manuals that I received were in Japanese (obviously...) and I was wondering if you know where I could find English manuals for the said bike or if I could download them from some site. I don't know but if anyone else does please drop us a line....

Any information would be grateful.

04/01/01 - Forum problems

There are problems at the moment with the Forum Section that will corrected ASAP - apologies for the downtime and thanks to those who reported the problem to me.   Kevin

04/01/01 - Brush up with a fellow Honda magna rider  - Zunkus sspiteri@mps.com.mt has a near miss....

I'm the Blue 1999 SVx owner from Malta. It's my first bike since July '99 and am doing great.

Last Friday I had a brush up with a fellow Honda magna rider. We were doing around a ton along a local bypass and I went wide in a fast turn. At that instant I froze, hit the brakes slightly, the bike straightened and was seeing myself going at the wrong direction. My friend who was about to pass me on the inside (left), hit his brake pedal with my left side of the swing arm. At the moment I thought he hit my tire. My damage was minimal as neither of us fell off, in fact he brought me to my senses and I
corrected my line.

In these situations the key is to relax so you can think straight. Oh yeah....right.....easy to say...hard to do! ;- ) I know I'll get better in time. Hopefully you won't have much practice!!

When we stopped to access the damage we found his pedal bent from two positions, while I had a small scratch at the adjuster plate. The Magna brake pedal was bent back to place, and the SV's plate was polished to leave a not so ugly slit. I'm fussy about my bike's appearance but the slit is so un-offensive that I think I'll leave it as is.
My Magna friend says it gives the bike some character. (we have an excuse for everything!).

Well two things learnt from this experience:
One; I have to clean up my act and learn to corner more effectively.  Two; my friend needs to stay in front of me and not behind me.

04/01/01 - TECH-LINE accessories information - If you're after accessories give Tech-Line a look.....

My name is Erik van der Burg and I'm working at a company called Tech-Line from the Netherlands.  We have some new items, some prices have changed and our contact information. The brand is TCP Aerodynamics from Spain.

We can supply a lower fairing, undertray, belly pan, hugger with chainguard, fender around rear tyre and a buddy cover for the Suzuki SV650.

The lower fairing will only fit the SV650S (with the original top fairing). It's painted in the original colour, complete with fitting kit and instructions in English. Fitting is very easy because we use the original places of the bike, so no welding or changing of the frame. The parts are made of the same material as the original fenders and side
plates. Also the parts have Tuv, which is a well known German safety certificate.

Price for the lower fairing 849 Dutch guilders (Euro 385)
Undertray 495 Dutch guilders (Euro 224).
Belly pan 649 Dutch guilders (Euro 294).
Fender around rear tyre 359 Dutch guilders (Euro 162).
Hugger 399 Dutch guilders (Euro 181).
Buddy seat cover 299 Dutch guilders (Euro 135).

Shipment costs are 85 Dutch guilders (Euro 38). Of course this depends on the country to where we have to ship it.Shipping is no problem, we've shipped to USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Lithuania, Denmark etc. When it's in stock, delivery will take around 5 days.

Payment by credit card is not yet possible. At the moment we work with money transfer by bank. This is safe, easy and fast. When you want to order we need the colour-code of the bike. Your dealer can give you that code.

02/01/01 - SV is the tops - we knew that anyway  - John john.tapley@btinternet.com provides a link to MCN to prove that the SV is tops...

http://www.motorcyclenews.com/NEWS/NEWS.asp?page=Earlier+News&passeddate=01/01/01&id=1338&index=0

02/01/01 - SV RUNNING TOO HOT  - Tracey tboult@internap.com needs some advice - please help her if you can...

I purchased my red SV650SY from Motor Cycle City in Far borough in Hampshire on 14/10/00. Since then I have enjoyed riding my bike immensely - I only passed my test on October 2nd so this is all very new to me and I have to confess I know nothing about bikes.

A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that my exhaust was overheating - this comment was caused as the front pipes of my exhaust, before the bend, glow very bright red very quickly on turning the bike on - this takes only a few seconds to get this hot (as long as it takes to put my helmet on  after starting the bike) also I have smoke and a burning smell coming up from between the fairing and the engine when I stop at junctions/lights. I  took my bike down to city and they said that this is perfectly normal and that I was not to worry, however I was speaking with the manager of Hein Gericke on Sunday and he asked how my bike was running, I told him it was lovely
and then about the exhaust - he too thought this was not quite right and suggested I get an opinion from a mechanic, spoke to a mechanic who said that he didn't think it was right but that he couldn't touch my bike as it would invalidate the warranty but he said you were 'biz' on the SV and that you would provide me with a definitive answer before I try to go back to City again. Sounds like a mixture issue to me...anyone else suggest a cause/solution to Tracey? If so please get in touch with us. In any event take it back to Motor Cycle City and make them fix it (if you haven't already!). Tracey - next time it would be quicker if you posted things like this in the Forum Section where the mass of SV knowledge can reply directly...thanks...

I use my bike every day to travel into Central London so I average about 400 miles per week - I would be so grateful if you could help me out - also can you let me know if it is possible to buy a leather tank cover to protect the tank, I have a tank bag for my work clothes and have found that I am getting some scratches, and a hard cover for the rear seat too as I do not intend to take anyone on the back even if I found someone brave enough to do so!! (I've never been on the back either and don't intend to do that either!!) Suzuki do a rear seat hump for the SV.

Thank you for your help - apologies for the waffle.

My apologies for taking ages to post this and other messages that have been backing up recently.

02/01/01 - The lazy way of front fork adjustment - Jerry Lynjed@aol.com has it sorted...if you follow this let me know how it goes...

Here's a piece for your FAQ section. Oh....OK then....

My reworking of the SV continues - just thought I would send the lazy way of changing the fork oil and adding spacers - without removing the forks!

Lets face it, removing the front wheel, mudguard, calipers, forks etc is a right pain - there is a better way and it can be done in under 15 minutes! You need a thin bamboo pole about 3 foot long, 2 metres of 10mm flexible pipe, a bent nail, 1 litre of fork oil and a selection of 35mm washers. You are now ready to convert the washed out front suspension without removing the fork legs and it can be done in under 15 minutes!

First loosen the fork caps, now jack up the front wheel clear of the ground.
Remove the fork caps completely - dont worry about the caps popping upwards with spring tension, there is none!
Remove the metal spacer tubes from inside the forks.
Attach your bent nail to bamboo stick with tape, grovell inside forks and pull up to remove spacer washer, then grovel again and remove the spring.
Remove bent nail, insert bamboo pole into one leg, until it goes to the bottom - careful, the bottom has a recess in, get it right and you will feel the pole go down another six inches.
Pull back out and mark oil level on bamboo stick with black marker pen for reference later.
Attach pipe to bamboo stick right at the end and again send to inside of forks, down into recess. Suck on pipe and all the oil will magically drain into can. Catch what can! - Whoops sorry you need a can to catch oil in! Process takes about two minutes and does remove all the oil! Drain second leg same.
Pour 480ml of 15 sw oil into first leg, insert bamboo stick and careful top up to reference mark made earlier. Follow suit with second leg. (Mr Suzuki was a full 30mm different from one leg to the other in my SV - you now have two perfectly balanced legs - 489 ml is the correct amount per leg)
Insert springs, then amount of washers to increase preload that you require - I inserted 15mm each side and it feels not bad. The washers must be 35mm exactly, anymore and they will not fit inside the legs. I managed to find some at 35.5mm and had to grind the .5mm off.
Just drop an equal amount in each leg and top off with the original suzuki washer.
Insert the spacers and tighten up the fork caps - you will have to push down hard as you tighten as your washers are now doing their job.
Lower jack and burn rubber up the street!

Some people prefer thicker 20 sw oil, or more spacers, around 19mm not uncommon. With the rear set on number four, the front now feels matched, doesn't flop when braking and has helped no end with the pitching (UK roads).

Rates about a seven on the improvement scale. You could do better and fit aftermarket springs but not for the £8 the above cost inc the oil.

So there you have it - the laziest way of uprating the SV front yet!

Kev, haven't forgotten about rewriting the undertray bit - waiting for a sunny day for nice piccys etc. Thanks, send them when you have them!

My next job is the rejetting for the Scorpion can ( bloody loud can or what! - has transformed lower pulling power though) - there must be a lazier way for that! If there is you'll find it....

02/01/01 - Tyre Width Question - Josh Jpm5120@aol.com in Texas asks....

Do you know if tl or gsx-r rear wheels with a 180 section tire will fit on the sv? I am thinking of buying an sv, but the rear tire is so skinny! but they were designed  like that...    if anyone knows please reply....

02/01/01 - Technical manual  - Zunkus sspiteri@mps.com.mt needs a manual....can you help??

I'm an SV650x owner from Malta, Europe. I'm looking for a technical manual on my bike. I already contacted Haynes, but they told me to wait for a while whilst they check the sales this bike makes, so as to  make the manual cost effective to them. I don't know of any other good technical manual producers so I'd be more than happy if any of you's could notify me of any.

Also heard that some chaps managed to get their hand on the official manual. If you happen to be one of the lucky please contact me for future reference and troubles we might discuss in the future.

ALSO...

If you want to read more about the best thing on wheels (as if you don't have that much already!), go to the SV group on this site...     http://www.bikegroups.com
