After fitting an undertail on the bike I have hated the slabby hugger. I even went to sell it on the site. I decided to take the Dremill to it this afternoon and I think it look much better. Kev Looks like a big improvement to me. I'm looking for a hugger myself at the moment and I can't find anything I like except the Suzuki one, but I'm not paying their price for it.

Hi John Attached is a sketch of the Internals showing my modification. After cutting the end off I removed the small pipe left in the end with a 2" holesaw and welded the 2" pipe straight in, Making sure that I left It 1/2" shorter than the baffle plate. The drawing Isn't perfectly to scale but a close representation. Let me know If It isn't clear enough. Kind Regards Graham Pearce, Oz Just to explain. This relates to a thread on the forum (general board I think). Gareth drilled a hole into his standard end can in order to improve the sound. Instead it made it worse. So rather than throw the can away and buy a new one, he took it apart and made some changes, which got him the sound he wanted. I can't remember the thread number off the top of my head |

(See Jan 16th) I've just been and measured it. (voltages - not what you were thinking) The R/Black is short (well 10 ohms anyway) to ground in 2nd gear, the G/Blue is short to ground in 3rd gear. I didn't bother measuring the other gears, judging by the voltage measurements I'd say that they were all open circuit. So I'd guess that it's not possible to build any wizzy variable retard circuitry. You could use these lines to add 2nd and 3rd gear lights to the dashboard. Find a 12V line that comes after the ignition switch (e.g. the live side of the horn) and run that to the lamps, then the other side of the lamps to the R/Bk & G/Bu wires. Either use small incandescent lamps or LEDs with 470 ohm resistors. |

Hi John Thought it was about time Thumper graced the image libraries. Cosmetically she's got a Fabbri dark tint double bubble screen, flush mount indicators, a 2-wheel junkie front mudguard and Suzuki lowers with a sticker made up by a local sign shop. The (tested!) crash protectors are from JHS, and the undertray and seat cowl are Powerbronze. The undertray forced the removal of the Powerbronze hugger due to fouling, and replacement with a Pyramid Plastics version which I prefer anyway. The can is a Scorpion joined to Micron front pipes. Footrest riser plates are also from JHS. There are quite a few mods under the skin too - details of these can be found on my website at www.mbrads.co.uk . Cheers, Mark |

I've just seen your message on www.sv650.org about the gearbox wiring. I guess that the igniter electronics (or at least, the logic part of it) runs on 5V, most computer stuff does (5.3V is close enough). It also gives the circuit a chance to regulate the noisy, spikey, only nominally 12V supply down to a nice clean 5V. I'd have to have an igniter box to take apart and trace the circuit to be sure. Maybe someone has a knackered one they'd be willing to donate? (it'd be fun if the thing was full of 74 series TTL chips and an EPROM) I'm surprised by the 2.6V reading, I'd have expected that to be 5V. At the weekend I'll measure the resistance to ground of those two wires. I'd expect them to be switches, either short to ground or off. If anyone would like to donate a dead igniter to Ian then contact him on the email above. |

Hi John, love the site, I've gleaned countless useful nuggets of information from it, so I hope my latest purchase will be of interest to the regulars. Pictured are a pair of mirrors with discreet indicators in them. (Bought mail order from Carbon Tek for £50.99 all in) They're considerably smaller than stock, but rear vision isn't completely compromised. They mounted easily with only two small holes required for the wiring, and using the original rubber mounts they're blur-free at speed. Gets rid of the giant stock indicators that threaten to punch a hole in the fairing if you drop it, too. I've blanked off the old holes with 2001 Vauxhall Corsa side repeaters. G'day John, Re the 'Retarder' issue, I gave Steve George's suggestion a fly and thought I could in fact detect a difference but I was initially a bit worried that such impressions might be the result of twisting the wrist just that little bit more. Then I've gone off on a tangent, it occurred to me that I could maybe use the signal wires for second and third gears as a starting point for a primitive gear indicator. Call me insensitive, but sometimes I'm not totally sure if I'm in third or second when downshifting for corners. My idea was that I could mount a couple of LED's on the dash as a visual indication when the bike was in either 2nd or 3rd. To check out the feasibility of this I needed to know a bit more so I patched a multimeter into the two circuits and got the following results (note I tried this with in both engine-running and ignition-ready modes): Red/Yellow wire 1st: 5.3V N: 5.3V 2nd: 0 3rd: 2.6V 4th: 5.3V 5th: 5.3V 6th: 5.3V Green/Blue wire 1st: 5.3V N: 5.3V 2nd: 0v 3rd: 0v 4th: 5.3V 5th: 5.3V 6th: 5.3V The first impression might be why aren't the voltages either 0 or 12V, but the answer is probably to do with the operative voltage of that part of the the Ignitor electronics. The Blue wire for the Neutral dash light is 12V and all three circuits use the Black/White wire as a reference to earth. My impression is that the gear lever is definitely used by the Ignitor unit to detect 2nd & 3rd gears, but not being an electronics engineer, it makes my gear indicator a bit trickier than I'd first imagined. I'm sure it can be made to work but I'll have to refer to some work colleagues for the gen. I have a feeling there could be some transistors involved. Like most other posters on this issue, I've found that the wire that runs between the gearbox and plastic connector shell is Red/Black rather than the manual's Yellow/Black (so on my bike, a Red/Black wire comes from the gearbox switch to join a Red/Yellow wire at the connector). The Red/Yellow and Green/Blue wires definitely buzz out to the Ignitor as per the wiring diagram. My bike is an E-24 Australian spec; we have drive-by exhaust noise regs so I suspect Suzuki employ the retarding circuitry for this market. I don't want to start a war here, but I have to say that Mark's idea about a single Pink wire is possibly some sort of hangover from the old RGV250 days. There's no Pink wire on the E-24 that I can find, that's not to say it doesn't feature in other markets. year and only recently had time for a bit of a strip down and clean me
bits etc So that tumble did more that scratch the exhaust, just goes to show that it doesn't always take much. I can't help Stu much on this other than point to MCN and the specialists section. Any help appreciated. |

John, I hope this finds you well. Attached are some pics of early "Version II" work on my SV. I mentioned in my last message that I was going to be making an MV replica tank. Well, here's the beginning of it. Take one MV tank and airbox (now where'd that come from...?) and take a fiberglass mold of them. Use the mold to make a prototype fiberglass tank, make it fit (yikes...!) then make a mold of that. What you see in the pictures is the prototype. I'm a the "make it fit" stage. The finished product will be a carbon/kevlar tank. It's looking pretty good so far. I'll keep you updated as things progress. Ride safely, Chris Baker I love this project, where will it end? |

Hi Steve i have recently read your posting on the site about disengaging the retarder very interesting. I have had a look at the wirers on my sv650sk1 and found the colours to be different [it is a uk spec] the red and green were the same but the red and yellow was red and black on my bike . With this development putting pay to my plans i contacted crescent Suzuki racing they confirmed that there was a retarder on the sv . They say that you can disconnect the two wires you say but if the wires differ in colour then all you need to look for is a pink wire linked to the gearshift. If this is the case then all you need to do is disconnect this and earth it to the frame or any other suitable point on the bike and this will have the same effect. A word of warning be careful of your warranty if you sling your pride and joy down the road.[this type of mod is frowned upon by Suzuki UK] hope this info is of some use to you. Mark Cheers Mark PS from Mark Hi John Some more info on the last email i sent you i have been in touch with JHS RACING and they say that this mod may sort out the flat spot at 5000 revs but if you use the ignition advancer that they can supply that costs £18.00 you will see an increase in power across the range of approx 3.5 BHP. As for box hill it would be great to see you all there the trip takes me about 30/40 mins from my house in ascot. Mark. Firstly, Happy New Year to one and all. 2003 should prove to be an interesting year as the new models start to hit these shores in the spring. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing about peoples feedback on these new machines. Despite the name of this web site, I shall include coverage of both capacities. I've been thinking for some months about getting some stickers made up for the site. I finally sorted out something with Julian from Axxent (Headlight mesh supplier) and had a small batch made up. I'll be offering these for sale in the next couple of weeks, once I've got myself organised. My own Sv hasn't seen much action recently mainly due to the office boozing and crappy weather. I did uncover it just after Xmas for a quick run into town. It did look a sorry state. The plan is to give it a good wash and then drag it into the workshop for a good going over. I don't intend to write a restoration article like last year because there isn't much to write about, there's a lot less work to tackle, but I will drop the odd item of interest into 'current data' as seems fit. The main tasks to tackle are the Big service (15K), rusty subframe, touch up the engine paint and replace the front brake hoses. Should keep me busy. John |
