15 Feb - 10 Years on
Greetings,
Happy Birthday SV 650.org !!! I first came across the site in 2002 when I started searching for a new bike. The SV fell within my budget and I liked the idea of switching to a twin from a 4 cylinder Suzuki 650 Katana. The site and all the positive comments on it convinced me to buy without seeing one in the showroom or even being able to go for a test ride. I downloaded every bit of info I could about the bike while I eagerly awaited delivery. The first SV 650 S I saw was my one when it arrived from the Suzuki warehouse in Johannesburg, looking very dirty and without the screen and indicators…... When the K2 model was written off I immediately told my local Suzuki dealer to get me a new one although I could not get a yellow one (no yellow in 2006…) The new blue one I watched being uncrated and watched the mechanic put acid into the battery and fit the screen and indicators. That was cool….. I am still very happy with my K6 SV and I fully intend shipping it to the UK when we relocate in early 2010. Thanks for the keeping the site running, it has proved to be of great help to me. Regards, |

4 Feb 2009 - Gladius Offer I came across this the other day and thought you might be interested. http://mailer.motocom.co.uk/press_release_archives/index.php?company=suzuki&tblreleaseID=1119 I think the Gladys hits the shop on the 23rd Feb. Are Suzuki expecting a sales success. I wonder. John |

2 Feb 2009 - 10 Years old. For some reason I had it in my head that this site turned 10 in February, but now I look back in the archives, I find that the page first appeared in 1998, probably soon after the SV650 was announced in the press. It would be nice to say that Suzuki have pulled out a 10th Anniversary special to mark the occasion, but sadly not. I could mention the Gladius but the less said about that the better. I thought you might like to see the original SV650.org web as hosted by Demon all those years ago. Click here. If you have any comments of memories to share, then please drop me a line john@sv650.org John |

2 Feb 2009 - Restoration Underway. My bike has been in the workshop for a few weeks now. Progress has been slow so far due to other distractions. You can monitor progress here. John |

10 January 2009
A bit late but a Happy New Year to you all. Just spent the last week trying to sort out my PC and subsequently ended up doing a complete rebuild, not one of my favourite jobs. I should be outside stripping the SV down and bringing it into the garage. I say garage, more of a workshop really. The previous owner took out the original garage door and blocked it in with a normal door and a window, so it looks like part of the house from the road. The narrow door makes it tricky to get the bike in and out, which is why it spends most of it's time outside. The workshop has a wooden floor and a proper plastered ceiling along with a butler sink in the corner. The boiler is also installed in there too, so it can be quite warm and pleasant to work in. What's stopping me at the moment is the cold weather, but it will get done this weekend (or maybe next) Talking down the pub with Daryl and Ed the other night, I moaned about the fact that I didn't get out on the bike much last years, apart from commuting and the AR08. Other distractions took away my time and want to try and avoid that this year. Ed has a rideout planned for April which is something nice to look forward too. AR09 is in the early planning stages. Looks likely that the date will fall in the summer school holidays, which might be a problem for me, but we'll see. John PS. Someone from Spain sent me an email and I managed to lose that in the process or fixing the PC. So please resend and I'll post it up. |

13 December 2008 - Winter. Well the bike hasn't seen much action in the last couple of weeks. Frosty, icy weather is no brainer for me, I have the option of using the car for work so I do. I might be wimping out, but I did 17 years of commuting into central London many years ago, so I know how it feels to have numb fingers. I also don't miss driving in the rain at night. London wasn't too bad for this as there are plenty of street lights, but the A5 between Shrewsbury and Oswestry is pitch black in places. The good thing about using the car for a few months is that it makes me appreciate the bike even more when I do get back on it. Absence makes the heart grow fonder they say.
I dropped into the NEC bike show on Dec 3rd with Daryl and Ed. I was curious to see the Gladius in the flesh. I can't say that I liked it any better. It does look like a poor attempt at copying the Monster and Shiva. The headlight is an abomination. It's a shame as I was really looking forward to seeing a fresh new SV this year and all we get is this. Things didn't look much better for the SV650s range either, with only the SV650s Sport now available in the UK. I was smitten more by the Yamaha Diversion directly opposite the new SV's which says a lot where I'll be looking for my next bike. On a positive note, I did get a new helmet, a Shoei XR1000. It's a lovely thing and I could believe how light it is compared to my old XR800. Looking forward to using that in the spring.
You can see a few of my NEC photos here.
The SV will be heading for it's winter rebuild after Christmas. A big service is due and some bearings need checking for wear like the head and wheels. Forks and top yoke need painting again as they are chipped to bits. I'll be trying some etching primer this time around to see if I can get better results.
Speaking of Christmas. I'm just about done with the shopping and the tree went up this afternoon. I hope you all have a great time and that Santa brings you something nice ;-)
John
PS I grabbed this month cover photo from Flickr, more on this bike here |
