30/05/01 -  Air Filter question - asked by Dave Daveedg@aol.com

I have a question concerning the air filter.

I forgot to notice the correct orientation for re-installing the air filter in my SV. I notice there is an arrow on the filter itself. Should this arrow point towards the front of the bike, or should the arrow point the other way and align with the arrow on the airbox it mounts in? I'm stumped. Can you help? this is more of a Forum question but I would have thought line the arrows up. I haven't checked mine though...anyone know for sure please contact Dave.

30/05/01 -  Rideout pics and comments - these from Tony (what's your email address? I lost it! aarrgghhh...)

An email from Tony, the guy who became your co-rider during most of the rideout (more through misfortune than planning lol). It was good to meet you, especially after the first rideout when I didn't get a chance to say hello. the same here!

Our mini rideout proved good fun too and I'm glad that Volvo turned out to be nothing (or at least my licence did lol). By following you, I got a good chance to see and hear what a twin set of Renegades look like on a SV - excellent and convincing (if you weren't already sure that you wanted a set). what do they sound like, I'm never following me?? Mine will be ordered once the warranty runs out on my bike. I've attached my pictures of the rideout (4) plus 2 fun ones of the possible origin of the SV (look at the number plate) and of course one of my bike (without Renegades - temporary!). Enjoy.

PS - I meant to say (but will say so now) a big thanks to you for your fantastic efforts on the website. This site plus the rideouts help the SV to be more than just a motorbike. thanks very much, pleased I can help...

30/05/01 -  New SV? - the culprit is Nick wpbr05852@blueyonder.co.uk

I saw this SV at a show in China it uses a twin cylinder diesel the forks are braced for stability in deap paddy fields as are the two swinging arms....the plough attachment is not shown in this picture.

26/05/01 -  Want to put Honda Hawk clip-on's onto your SVS? See below. thanks to John (again) for the info..

26/05/01 -  Gear Lever Seizure - thanks for the update Tony tonyp2020@aol.com glad you got sorted.

Remember my posting about removing the Circlip from the bearing under the engine?? And how the gears don't work afterwards? certainly do..see here..

RHS crank case covers off, various bits put back in the right place, new gaskets and Bingo. Fixed. Lets hope it stays that way. Looks like I was the only one to get it wrong, thank god or any suitable deity handy.  So sorry about the panic e-mail. I have apologised to the author of the original posting as well, he was only trying to help.

In my defence there is an open bearing under the washer held in place by the circlip. The gear change lever is very sloppy on my SVS so I did not think that was the gear he meant. In fact I think my SVS has the RHS footrest and fixings from an SVS, but the LHS seems to be from an SV. The previous owner dropped it on the LHS, one reason why it was a good price.

As part of repairing the engine I changed all the crankcase (not cylinder) bolts for Stainless Steel Allen Socket Heads. I changed them one at a time to avoid links.

The sizes are below, just in case you feel like posting them on the website. With the usual warnings etc.......

I found that SS bolts only came in 10mm increments i.e., 20mm, 30mm, 40mm etc., so I just used the next size up, but I also fitted plain washers and spring washers at the same time. I have done the sizes for both the chrome head (on the outside crank cases) and the more hidden black headed bolts. All the bolts are 6mm diameter (bolt length does not include the head, just the thread).

25/05/01 -  Shimmed carb needles and de-snorkeled air filter - this sent in by ZunKus sspiteri@mps.com.mt

I recently moved the c-clip one position down on my carb needles. This is the same as inserting the 3mm washer between the c-clip and plastic gromit on those needles which do not have adjustment slots. I believe the American SV's are the unfortunate unadjustable needled ones, most probably to reduce tinkering due to harsher emission regulations there.

Well I also cut a bigger hole in the standard air filter. My reasoning was that since I'm letting more fuel in, I might as well let more air in to balance the equation.

My God what a difference! To say the truth I used to be jealous of other v twin bikes with their musical sounds whilst mine sounded like an underpowered something. No more. It now sounds super, and it shows with a green light, the fuel light that is as sounding so great I'm trashing it more. I now need to check the emission to see if it's too rich or lean.

I was wondering if anyone here has done the same modifications as I did. Please let me know if you dynoed or emission tested your bike. Please note I'm still on the stock exhaust, mainly because I don't want too much noise.

Also if anyone has a mikuni 39mm BDSR manual or any information on this carburator please mail me some readable scans. A ducati flyscreen is next on the agenda, as soon as I find one that is :)

25/05/01 -  Info on Devil products wanted by James jtt220@hotmail.com

I really want to find out how to get a hold of who ever runs Devil products.  I like some of their stuff but I can't find their website or any other info on them
anywhere! Please help!   can anyone point us in the right direction??

22/05/01 - Two ride-out images from Marcelo ravetiger@wildmail.com when he was lost (who wasn't!)...

Two pics here , dont know where we were but it was great, we got split into at least three groups that i was a part of.

I arrived at M&P just in time to leave , just kept on riding without a break till our little group stopped where this pic was taken , 15mins later we were joined by a a couple more guys then 30 mins after that one solo came riding in, had a beer then came back home as the weather was looking dodgy and we were in jeans :)

It was really great to see so many SV's together , a truly unique experience cant we do it again before next year?  well, yes.....I'll do one for North Wales...see my rideout comments below...

Had a chat at the pub there with a blade rider who pretty impressed by all the SV's and the noise we made.

I had a wonderful time even though my g/f and i had a bit of fright while overtaking an SV on some sort of uneven divider on the road caused a  pretty nasty tank slapper that soon got under control , not fun at 90 though.

22/05/01 - Few images and exhaust problems from Stu sflacks@yahoo.com

I thought it was about time I posted some images of my bike which I bought back in May last year (2000). I've had no prob's with it at all and it given me so much pleasure. But as you can see I've still got the standard exhaust fitted and that's starting to get me down especially seeing everybody else getting there after market ones.

Cos I'm living across the water at the mo, it posts a problem with getting a Renegade systems. Your help would be appreciated if you have any ideas and any contacts that I could get in touch with. anyone like to advise Stu??

Keep up the great work with the Site.

22/05/01 - Screen query from Steve stevenmathers@yahoo.com - anyone know or can help please let Steve know...thanks..

There is a picture of a yellow SVS (page 23/57), that has a new screen fitted. Q) where did this screen come from, how much was it, and did it offer better wind protection without too much extra turbulence?

18/05/01 - Ride-out comment from last Sunday...

It was really good meeting other SV riders and seeing the various bikes....thanks to all who turned out on a day that started off in brilliant sunshine and ended in thunder and lightening storms...can't win them all...

Someone (was it you Matthew?) counted 39 SV's about 30 mins before we left for the ride and quite a few more arrived after. If anyone knows the final figure please let us know.

The meeting point was ideal, large car park and cafe for grub. That was the good bit.

The ride-out itself went a bit tits-up and I apologise to all who got lost or who spent ages riding around and not actually getting back to the meeting point (if they were planning to)!

The problem was that I unfairly asked John my mate to lead out because he had a tank bag, a map and is very good at getting us from A to B (sorry John). Problem was John, like me, didn't know the area at all and map reading on the move isn't easy (isn't possible!). Result was a group that got strung out quickly and a load of SV's heading for Reading town centre....not exactly where we had planned to go (the massed start was impressive though, especially from the front with a mass of headlights in tow).

The group I was in went away from me and I ended up doing 50% of the ride with a guy (Tony) who I'd never met before! We got around after a few stops to map read and made it in about 25 mins after the group I was originally with. Thanks Tony for getting us back to Foxes Diner.....and I thought the Volvo following us up the last bit of the Hungerford to Swindon road was an unmarked cop car too....

I made it home at 20:30 after battling through (at pretty high speed keeping up with a Pan Euro two up!) thunder storms and heavy rain up the A49 Ross-on-Wye to Shrewsbury road. In all John and I spent about 7-8 hours in the saddle...and could tell! I think the guys from the West Country and Yorkshire probably did longer.

Lesson's learned. I did enjoy the day but am sorry the ride-out wasn't shorter and more 'together'. Next time I'll ensure that there is someone local who knows the roads.

I'm happy to organise another SV rideout later in the year but it will be in North Wales as I know lots of great roads, don't need to read a map as I ride and will try to make more time for people to chat and chill rather than spend ages riding around getting lost. The meeting place will be the Pondarosa cafe on the top of the Horseshoe Pass above the town of Llangollen. I'll sort the rest out in a few months time.

So, thanks to all who took the trouble to turn out, I hope it wasn't a wasted trip and if anyone wishes to organise rideouts then send in the info and I'll post it for all or, even better, use the SV rideout page at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/sv650rideouts

I'll post above test to the rideout webpage along with pics soon. (
l'll post them over the weekend...honest!)

PS...I think some of the images in Catalog 11 don't display as they should,...I'll sort that out too...

Kevin

18/05/01 - A tweaked SV - this from Simon stuffforsimon@hotmail.com thanks.....

Great site ! I have used it to get recommendations and info for most of the mods on my bike.

I was hoping to come to the ride out but couldn't make 13th so I thought I would send you some pics and a .wav of my SV instead :)

Alterations so far....

A stage 4 kit with twin full system from JHS Racing - a huge improvement (I intend to send in some more info on the work done by JHS Racing/my day with James/the way the bike feels soon if that would be of interest). JHS also fitted sintered pads, goodrich hoses on the front (stoppies are us) and Avon Azuro II 35/36's (much better grip and more stable cornering, bike doesn't feel like its trying to stand up time, feels more like its on rails). All of which also made great improvements.

The suspension has been worked on by MCTechnics (taller Technoflex rear shock, preload and rebound adjustment and rebuilt front forks, ohlins springs, changed air gap, etc) once again a good improvement, turns in faster, dives less, feels like its on suspension rather than just soggy sponges, but also means that under hard acceleration on a bumpy old road you run the risk of bike shaking its head.

My experience with the bodywork/trick bits, was mostly good. The Pyramid under tray doesn't mean too much cutting compared to experiences I have read from others (tool kit mounting points and forward remain intact, do need to remount the Control Unit slightly forward though) but as with all the others, expect to drill and spend some time with a dremmel and a lighter !

Also, Top Block (via Motrax) do some foot pegs that look good, but the ones which claimed to be for the SV drooped when fitted since the rear profile does not have a stop ! The Sliders are from JHS, very solid mounting (via a replacement front engine mounting rod), though needed to cut lowerers and will not protect them (though most importantly will do a great job of protecting the frame !).

Anyway, must get back to upsetting 748's :)

15/05/01 - IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ THIS...Gear Lever Seizure- Warning -  Thanks to Tony tonyp2020@aol.com for pointing this out...

With reference to the posting reprinted below, I removed the C clip and washer that hides this particular bearing on the gear shaft, lubbed the bearing and replaced the washer and C clip.  I did not use a new C clip and damaged the old when either removing or refitting it, and believe me I know better.

The upshot is that the C clip came loose and the shaft moved back into the engine and now the gearbox doesn't work, the lever just moves around a bit without engaging the gears, and these is no selector return spring either.  This happened after switching the engine off at a petrol station about 1 mile from my home. I was/am unable to select any gear and so had to push the bike
home. What a workout, jesus i was knackered. motorcycling can be harmful to your health...

After consulting the workshop manual, (pages 3-95 and 96) It looks like I will have to remove the clutch to repair this fault.

This is entirely my fault, the posting by Davis Deans was a good one and he had his repaired by his dealer. I will post this information on the forum as a warning, and also hope somebody knows an easy fix for this problem.

11/05/01 - sv650.org web move

Due to the move of this web to a new server can I please ask you all to hold off sending emails for ads or with information for the site until after the move. I will have no access to make updates and it just means my email queue will grow even longer and you guys have to wait longer to see your postings made....thanks in advance.

09/05/01 - Move of sv650.org server and downtime

http://www.sv650.org/neoboard/neoboard.php3?board=tuning_board

The rest of the SV650.org web will move over at the weekend so expect some disruption to service. For your information the web is moving from Charleston to Altanta. As ever big thanks to Steven who provides hosting for this web out of the goodness of his heart (he's a bike nut too - currently running a Ducati Monster). Without his help this web wouldn't exist so respect is due....    The domain name should not change, if you find no service at sv650.org try the www.lodigo.com address above as a temporary measure. I won't be around at the weekend...see below ;- )

09/05/01 - Ride-out on Sunday 13th

For anyone going on Sunday have a safe journey and enjoy the warm sunny weather! (fingers crossed)

Be careful of plod (there's bound to be quite a few out if it is sunny) and please try to keep the noise down at the meeting point. I think it's residential so please have a thought for locals before demonstrating how loud your aftermarket race can sounds at maximum revs!  I will be looking for someone local to the area to head the pack out onto the road,  trying to stick to the route as shown. Any volunteers please pick me out and let me know (see Site Admin link for my ugly mugshot - going greyer by the day....) I hope to get there 11:30-12:00 and will be going back to the meet point after the ride-out....See you there!!

09/05/01 - Image of an SV with all the bits added - Sent in by Tim timvs@dircon.co.uk

Yeah, i know it has the "usual" sv extras added, but everyone else has sent in their bike, and now it's finally (almost) finished, I thought I might as well send mine too!

TCP lower
M&P flush inidicators
Powerbronze undertay and dubble bubble screen
Renegade twin 'zorst

no cowl 'cos I'm always bungeeing stuff to the pillion grabrail still on 'cos I use it to get it up on a paddock stand.  next job powder coat the wheels yellow and get some new rubber (Avon Azaro's seem to be the pro's choice).

09/05/01 - Paint codes - Stuart had trouble stuart.foreman@cwcom.net

Just posted a message on the Forum about paint. Apparently Suzuki don't release paint codes, which is why it took 7 weeks to match the paint on my scuffed lowers. In future I'll use Dream Machine who can do a 2 week turn around on panels !

OK, lets sort this issue out. Anyone who knows the paint codes for all the colours (red, black, yellow and blue) please send them in. If you have the differing codes for the different years that's even better. you tell me and I'll post them on the FAQ. I know I've posted the yellow ro blue code but I haven't seen the 1999 red paint code (and I need some for touching up chips on fairing).

09/05/01 - Gear Lever Seizure - thanks for this info from Dave david.deans@gecapital.com

IMPOTANT - please read posting of 15/05/01 first!

Nearing the end of the winter weather (was that last week - lol), I noticed that when trying to change down a gear (or two), the gear lever refused to do so. Therefore it was a trip to the dealership to sort out. It would appear that Suzuki have put a dry bearing on the gear lever which can seize, and manifests itself in the form of not changing down.

The dealership took the bike in and got everything working again, but told me to ensure that I have a seal of grease around the bearing in the future. This keeps water out and stops the bearing seizing. Owing to what they said, I am going to do this as part of my own maintenance programme, and I would advise fellow SV owners to do so. The interesting thing is, is that owing to the problem I was able to find out that I can pull away from lights in 4th.

I would also like to thank the dealership (Alivns of Edinburgh) who have fixed or changed everything fee of charge, and have given me tips on maintenance to keep the SV in good nick. From what I have heard, there are quite a few dealerships that are only interested in the money, not in customer relationships, therefore I think that it is only fair that we start acknowledging dealers who look after their customers.

Thanks again for your fountain of knowledge site. thanks and it's always good to hear of dealers you've been pleased with

09/05/01 - Images of a unique SV - thanks Mike mk@auriculum.com for sending

i finally did the refinishing i had planned for eons. the bike's not finished - i still have a gsxr front end i need to mount, and i'm building a custom gauge cluster and putting a sargent seat on at some point, but this'll give you an idea.

http://www.auriculum.com/eraserhead/

if you are running something other than windows/IE5, you may want to look here: http://www.auriculum.com/img/eraserhead/  (anything named photo#.jpg is a big pic, anything called th#.jpg is a thumbnail of the big pic).

enjoy! and hope to see you at laguna seca :)

09/05/01 - Fuel economy - Steve steven_mathers@non.agilent.com asks....

Im nearing 30,000 kms on the clock, and I think my fuel economy is starting to improve. Is that common, and why? Or am I imagining it...

Well....your engine will be looser, so less friction, so better economy. Maybe your riding style has changed without you realising it, as the bike is older you thrash it less (apologies if you've never thrashed it at all!). Anyone with a more technical explanation let us know.  I filled up last week and didn't hit flashing reserve light until 167 miles, that's a record for me, usually its about 140-145 miles max.

09/05/01 - More SV images, this time from Ray rayosofsky@worldnet.att.net

Attached are three pictures of my SV. Scottoiler2.jpg shows how I mounted the Scottoiler delivery tip which I think is somewhat unique. It does not interfere with the wheel axle nut. The other two photos show views of my "naked" bike with a Targa 1/4 fairing and FreeStreetDesign rear hugger.

Hope you find them amusing. I (we all) really enjoy this site!!!! Keep up the great work!!!! OK, I will...

07/05/01 - Remove fairing? This from Daryl daryl.hicks@btinternet.com

I have just brought a SV650s, 2000 model, dark blue, £3600, 1500 miles as new and I got a good trade in on my ' Divi' from my local main dealer and boy am I one happy boy. One thing I need to know is how to remove the fairing ( nothing in the F.A.Q. on our site ). just undo the fasteners as far as I can remember...the tricky bit is getting the fasteners back into the rubber gromets that sit in the fairing.

P.S will you or any SV owners be going to the B.M.F this year ?.  not sure, don't think I'm going but some of you guys must be...let Daryl know and maybe meet up for a chin-wag?
